I feel you. Like, yeah, I get it, Donnie’s not known for making arthouse flicks and movies that require a lot of brains to really enjoy, but to look down on his skill, talent, and astonishing amount of intelligence just because his chosen movie style isn’t typically “highbrow” is a really shitty thing to do, especially considering how long he’s been in the industry and how well respected he is within it.
Only thing I can recommend is to try and avoid people who are open about their disdain of him. There are plenty of us who appreciate him for all he can bring to the table, far more than just his looks or how well he can throw a punch. I promise we’re out there, and we’re just as outspoken about how much we love him. (And most of us write fic! :D)
This.
Being an action actor isn’t easy. The amount of training and the effort they need to make to maintain their physical condition is very difficult. They often suffer from
occupational injury
too. I think just for this, they are not lesser just because the works they do are not considered “brain-y”.
Not to mention that Donnie Yen is a good action director, so he can both act and direct in his field of expertise, like Jiang Wen. I admire Jiang Wen too, but Jiang Wen can’t do what Donnie can do and vice versa (Can JW do a jump side kick? I don’t think so lol). It’s like criticizing a biologist because their math is not as good as a
mathematician but in fact they are both good scientists.
It’s more interesting to imagine what would it be like if they make a film together. Hmm…
