Jiang Wen (also called Xiaojun in his childhood), who recalls nostalgically his own viewing of The Red Detachment of Women (Xie Jin’s 1961 film, translated at Premier Zhou Enlai’s suggestion into a model ballet in 1964, refilmed in 1970, and seen briefly in Heat of the Sun): “Watching the women on stage with guns and short shorts, that was the first time I ever experienced sexual feelings.”
