1. What is your favorite book of all time?
Crime and Punishment. I love the intense emotion in it.
2. What are you currently reading?
Nothing. I am an impulsive reader. I only read when I was intrigued by something that leads me to a book, so I am not an active reader. The last book I read is the new Thrawn novel.
3. Have you ever thought about writing a book?
No. I’m not a writer material. I did write self-insert wu-xia fanfic (?) based on my universivy classmates and myself, which is an embarrassing thing to read.
4. What’s your favorite series?
Vampire Hunter D. It’s a shame that our publisher (was rumored to) fucked up with the japanese copy right holder and thus can’t get the authorization for translation after the 12th book. I tried to read the english version to catch up but the english language completely lost the unique lingual atmosphere in japanese wording and phrasing that’s what make this series special.
5. What is a book you want to read?
I don’t know. I read whatever that catches my attension.
6. What’s in your Tbr pile?
I read half way through The Brothers Karamazov but the translated version I have was translated 70 years ago (yeah, I just checked) so even if the translation itself has no problem, the language structure itself are too out-dated to be read easily for modern readers. But I really should finish this book.
Other books I should read but never
got the right motivation/mood to start: Benim Adim Kirmizi
and War’s Unwomanly Face.7. Who are your favorite fictional characters?
Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever grow attached to a book-only character.
8. Favourite Ship?
No -book-only
ship either. Probably because most of the books I read don’t have many ship-able characters.
9. Open the first page of the book closest to you and write down the first paragraph.
"一天早晨,葛雷戈˙桑姆薩從不安得睡夢中醒來,發現自己在床上變成了一隻大得嚇人的害蟲,硬如鐵甲的背貼著床。"
The first line of the mandarin translation of Franz Kafta’s Die Verwandlung.
It sit between Hart of DarknessI and a broken hard drive.
10. What was the first fandom
you were in?Book fandom? Probably Lord of the Rings. I have the oldest translation of LotR way before the movies were out in my country. Fantasy novels were obscure to non-exist back in my days here. Plus internet was not very advanced at that time either so I didn’t really have a “fandom”. But I gathered whatever little materials I could so I guess that counts as my first book fandom.
I did like the Harry Potter series for a while, so that should be counted as an early book fandom of mine too. But I lost interest after the 4th book when it tried but failed (imo) to expand it’s universe.
YI….FITE ME
OVER HARRY POTTER
no it’s fine..you’re entitle to you opinion..(see you in the pit)
Man i love Crime and Punishement. a couple of other Dostoyefksi (i’m spelling it wrong in english ) works are in my to-read-list if only i had time
pff finding good translations is hard…the entire first book of HP had a different translator and they changed her and in the second one you have to REALLY try to guess what names of wizard-related stuff are which in the new translation…lmao
We only have 3 or 4 of Dostoevsky’s books translated. Russian literature is too obscure here and the publisher can’t take the risk of publishing a non-profitable book *sigh*
It’s terrible when publisher (editor?) doesn’t sync the characters and terms in one series translated by different people. How unthoughtful.
