HEY I KNOW THINGS ABOUT THESE GUYS.
So this critter is called all these things but they’re more commonly called hellbenders. They live in rivers, under rocks and in crevasses. And the reason I know things about them is that my zoo is HUGELY into hellbender conservation, to the point that – not gonna lie – we’re all a little weary of hearing about hellbenders at the meetings even if we’re glad they’re doing it. They do egg collection and they raise tiny baby hellbenders and repopulate the rivers and even construct artificial habitats so they can study how the hellbenders are doing.
They’re not cute. They’re not pretty. They don’t look good on a fundraising brochure. But they’re important to the ecosystem, like all animals are, and I love that my zoo is so hyped up about helping the hellbenders.
It’s nicknamed “baby fish” in chinese because it squeaks like a baby lol
THEY ARE CUTE
