A small headcanon…

Instead of foreseeing his master’s sacrifice, Caleb foresees his own.

The image he sees has no meaning to him at this point. From his perspective, it’s a Twi’lek woman and a young man, neither of which he recognizes. He dismisses it easily, chalking it up to his overactive mind.

Years later, he meets Hera. First he just hears her voice, but then when he actually sees her in the dim light of the Gorse back alley, he gets a sense of

déjà vu. He has no idea why. He has the barest of memory of seeing a woman’s face twisted in pain, but it can’t be the same person. Kanan looks at this confident young woman and assures himself he’s never seen her before.

Then, years after that, he meets this cocky street rat on a backwater planet in the Outer Rim. Again, he’s hit with a sense of déjà vu, but it’s not nearly as strong as it had been with Hera. Kanan can’t even figure out why this kid seems so familiar. Not until after they liberated the Wookies, when Ezra is gazing at him sadly, thinking he’s going to be dumped back off on Lothal. It’s his eyes. Kanan can’t remember where, but he knows he’s seen those striking sapphire eyes, filled with pain, somewhere before.

Regardless, these feelings were easily brushed off, long forgotten in the years that followed. There were adventures, an admiration that slowly grew into love, soaring pride, a sense of purpose… Even after he was blinded, Kanan’s love and connection with his family only grew stronger, and in a way, nothing else mattered.

While preparing to rescue Hera, Kanan knew that this might be the end. He could hear the loth wolves whispering to him in the Force. He could hear whispers of the future, a future where he was gone and his family was grieving. It made his heart ache, but if this what it took to save his family, to save the planet – maybe even the galaxy – from a much greater evil…

He would surrender himself to that higher purpose.

And as soon as the fuel pod was hit, he knew it was the end. With every ounce of his being, he asked the Force for the strength to hold the explosion at bay, to keep his family back

He turned his head towards them, wishing he could see them, wishing he could make them understand…

And then the darkness lifted.

And he saw it….

And he remembered.

I don’t… I don’t understand,” a young Caleb had said.

And yet, I’m confident, child, that some day… you will.”
