gffa:

SOLO SPOILERS AHEAD:

LANDO CALRISSIAN, I LOVE HIM.

I LOVED EVERYTHING THEY CHOSE TO DO WITH HIM.

Fancy capes!  And what I especially loved about Lando’s fashion choices is that they walked the line between being a little over the top about how much of a clotheshorse he was, but also that they were absolutely serious about how attractive he was and how he was seen as beautiful and amazing.  Qi’ra’s smile when talking about him, the way it’s just a touch of dreamy, shows us that, yes, Lando Calrissian is genuinely hot in the GFFA.

Lando’s a little ridiculous, the whole The Lando Calrissian Chronicles (OMG PLEASE MAKE A SERIES OF WEB SHORTS ABOUT THAT, DON GLOVER, I AM BEGGING YOU) is definitely hilarious, but it’s not a joke at his expense.  He likes fancy things!  He likes flirting!  He likes playing cards!  He likes being a shining diamond in the rougher parts of the galaxy!  He likes clean, nice things!  He’s fancy.

But he also cares and enjoys his life and has a heart somewhere in there, he’s a scoundrel but he’s still that guy who will help the Rebellion when push came to shove.

It’s the same with his pansexuality, which I was surprised at just how much was legitimately supported by the movie.  They may not have stated it directly (but they did explain it through word of god and Don Glover mentioning it on national TV) but I sure as hell felt it.  The implication of what he’s tried out with L3, “It works.”, the way he flirted with Han (”Better buckle up, baby.”), the way he lit up when he saw Qi’ra, that guy loved being charming and trying to get into the pants of fun, interesting, beautiful people (and droids).  And that it was clearly great, we were meant to think Lando was dazzling!

I am also very, very much in favor of the framing of the, “I hate you.” “I know.” moment because it deliberately calls up the memory of Han and Leia’s conversation on Cloud City.  It legitimately is inviting you to make mental comparisons to Han/Leia, inarguably one of the most famous Star Wars couples ever.  Add to that, L3′s comment about flirting, the “baby” line, the banter, (”I never want to see you again.”  “Never!?”), and I absolutely saw it as being seriously there and seriously intended.  Maybe not as consummated, but certainly legit attraction being subtext there.

His banter with L3 was great as well, mourning her loss because he genuinely liked her, that he may have rolled his eyes about her constant desire to spread chaos and rebellion, but he was never going to leave her on Kessel.  He may have taken off from Savareen and left Han and Chewie there, but he didn’t do so in a way that truly fucked them over.

He was just SO MUCH FUN AND SO CHARMING AND SO DAZZLING.

I WILL NEVER BE OVER THAT HE AND L3 HAD THAT HAND SIGNAL THEY MOVED IN SYNC WITH.

“You might want to quit while you’re ahead.”  “You might want to quit while you’re behind.”

THE BLASTER TOSS.

THE CAPE CLOSEST.

ALL OF IT WAS PURE STAR WARS FUN.
