For contrast and an idea of how badly deep sea creatures hold up when they’re brought to the surface, this specimen was one of our only glimpses of the same species before this footage:
It’s almost unrecognizable as the same fish.
Our image of many deep sea creatures can be as incomplete as our image of some dinosaurs.
Another example:
This is a typical dead specimen of a whip nosed anglerfish, caught in traps and brought to the surface.
The first recording of one in the wild was only a couple years ago, and it revealed that they swim upside-down:
We don’t know why, and we don’t know if they do this 100% of the time or just when they’re hunting.
