on symbiote pronouns… i’ve settled on “it”, but that’s definitely not because i mean to say, like, no gender = no human. i only mean to say alien = no human, and it’s sort of… i don’t want to say reclamatory, but something i have a thing about… not holding the symbiote to human standards. “it” is also used by Big Time Monster Sympathiser Eddie Brock in canon, which i took as a sign that he sort of… sees it similarly to me… and the symbiote doesn’t disapprove.
like, when someone goes “you’re not human/like us, you’re worthless” you can either go “i actually am human/like you, therefore not worthless” or “i may not be human/like you, i’m still not worthless”. there’s a real trend where, for non-human characters, more human-like is equated with more sympathetic, and it just… annoys me.
(remember how rad legion from mass effect was? and then their big moment of pathos was going from referring to themselves as “we” to “i”? that was the big indicator of them having “a soul”, just straight-up lying about what they were or actually downgrading themselves to something more palatable? dumb.)
it’s kind of like how some people dislike the symbiote not having its own name, calling it “venom” or “v” or something because a name to be called by is kind of a basic, important marker of worth and identity for a human. and my instinctive reaction was always more like… it doesn’t have a name, it doesn’t conceptualise itself in any way humans understand, and that’s #valid. i’ll go with it.
but this is just an explanation. so if it’s upsetting people, i can switch to “they”.
Kind of an interesting idea, is they’re so Hive-oriented that they don’t even give themselves names? Like, maybe the group structure is so much more important than the individual, and then later in life their host-bond is so much important than the individual, that they don’t even bother.
I mostly use it or he because english is stupid (x) and because I have similar thought. It is the symbiote, he is Eddie Brock, they are Venom. Three pronounes so that it’s more easy to use them to refer to the one I want to talk about because someone doesn’t have a name.
