Gosh I read it but there’s so much of early Agent Venom stuff that I found very ugh. It gets better eventually but with that whole ‘the symbiote is initially drugged and forced into partnership with Flash’ thing is something I find really offputting. And the outfit too, gosh, in one of the Carnage series where Spider-Man is like, ‘the Punisher is dressed like me???’ I normally don’t feel Spidey but I did then.
that’s why i’ve been procrastinating. (opens agent venom) (symbiote is enslaved and the moral question of whether this is acceptable is whether it is too dangerous to be exploited) (closes agent venom)
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH.
this is cates’ favourite run to the point where he did that tribute issue to it.
oh, buddy. oh, man. finally i fucking know where he got it from, word for word.
this anti-venom deal keeps getting weirder. i’d been on my way to considering that maybe the later writers DID realise that eddie hadn’t changed for shit, wasn’t inherently a better person without the symbiote and kept all the same delusions and denials as the least reliable narrator to ever narrate anything, but then…! people sure do seem to take it at face value, at least!
i’m never going to be able to take “you miss it when it’s gone” as an eye-opening accusation, jesus christ. it’s called an emotion. extreme attachment to a person can be unhealthy but to equate it to addiction to a substance… stripping the symbiote of personhood is the only way to do it… saying that it means nothing beyond power and adrenaline… and is constantly done. gh…
imagine hearing this under any other circumstances. imagine missing your partner being described as “waiting for your next fix”. oh wait there is a part of the population this has happened to isn’t there.
i’m losing it. this could so blatantly be read as “eddie is looking for someone to blame and to rationalise lingering feelings for the symbiote away” and it’s just. is it really just not that? is it just… what???
And not to get too much into The Discourse™️ here but like. The whole Christian-religious fanaticism element of Anti-Venom kinda skeeves me out in this context, especially considering the queer overtones of the mid to late 90s Venom comics? After those, we suddenly get Eddie having this bizarre Christian zealot awakening while also having the revelation that the very thing he loved is in fact a “demon” and a “corruption” that must be “cured” or “cleansed” and I’m just. HMMMMMMMMM. I don’t think there was any deliberate malice in the writing here but it still makes me feel icky tbh.

it always a huge relief when you *feel* something but you can’t Do The Words and some awesome person who feels the same way Does The Words
