so one night spidey’s doing as he do, stopping some crimes, fighting some supervillains, except then all the bad guys run away screaming

take a moment to pity this individual dressed like a card, who was a young starry-eyed child of God once and probably didn’t imagine that this would be his life
“But we used the stealth technology in your old suit to sneak up on him!”
note that line. it’s the first of several times Venom talks about how awesome and cool the symbiote is. that’ll be important later.
and then, this:
yeah. Venom wants to be Spidey’s sidekick.
and here’s what i love; like other 2010s stories, this comic takes the absolute piss out of 90s Venom
BUT
it does so without making Big V an unlikable character or making the symbiote a life-ruining parasite (take notes donny m’lad).
on the contrary, Venom’s fucking hilarious here, he is SO BAD at being a good guy but he tries SO HARD. he’s just this big lovably clueless toothy boi trying his best to impress Spidey and fucking up all over the place.

after spidey talks Venom out of murdering a guy in front of a thousand cops, the two of them go swinging around the city searching for this Alice In Wonderland-themed gang that Spidey’s been on the lookout for

anyway, most of the story is just that, Venom following Spidey around while Spidey tries to solve crimes and Venom…

here we see our heroes perching alongside one another like spooky pigeons
and of course peter is not having a good time at all
warning: i am obliged to point out that peter is an absolutely STAGGERING asshole in this story and these next panels will show why. spideyfans, this is your stop.
so they track down the gang, Venom gets caught and
it is delightful. THEN spidey reveals that – surprise! – he’s deduced Venom’s REAL reason for following him around all night.
Venom was actually working with the gang all along!
Shock! Gasp!
and how did spidey work this out???
1. if u know the symbiote is sentient, y r u calling them a costume peter. answer me peter.
2. ‘stupid and convoluted’ – what in yr very limited interactions with the symbiote so far has lead you to think that they are stupid peter? peter? peter i’m waiting. answer me. answer me peter.
ok, so the plot thickens. we now know Venom had ulterior motives for teaming up with Spidey. Why, then, was Venom doing this? Was it for money? Power? A trap to lure Spidey to his death?
nope.
Venom did it because the symbiote wanted to impress Spidey so much that Spidey would take them back.
and eddie was apparently on board with this plan, even though we saw in his last appearance that being separated from the symbiote is painful for him
and while the comic doesn’t explicitly say that eddie decided to help the symbiote get back to spidey because eddie wants his beloved to be happy even at the cost of his own happiness, that is 100% why eddie decided to help
now.
with all that in mind.
what do u think spidey does next.
with Venom tied up and helpless in front of him, having just admitted to having spent the night trying to impress him in the hopes that he would take the symbiote back
what do u think he does.
and so our lighthearted romp ends, on a shot of Venom screaming in unspeakable agony while Spidey tortures him to within an inch of his life

anyway, apart from that incredibly fucked-up ending, this story is actually awesome and gay as fuck, a+++ recommended

Venom: Deathtrap: The Vault (1993). Daredevil became the public defender of Eddie Brock. He asked Spiderman as the material witness. An interesting read with good story telling for a one shot.
Venom: Carnage Unleashed (1995)
Good story. Even though it’s full of the early 90′s techno fantasy nonsense. Pretty sure internet doesn’t work that way lmao.
Amazing Spider-Man: Super Special: Planet of the Symbiotes
(1995)
It took place somewhere after Seperation Anxiety. Must read to get to know the background of Venom symbiote. I think it also set up the symbiote more as an actual character. Eddie started to actually talk with it, at least as shown in the comic, so the reader can see more of the symbiote’s input and thoughts. Also very gay.
Venom: Sinner Takes All (1995)
It picked up loose ends from Carnage Unleashed. I’m not sure what’s the chronological order of Seperation Anxiety/Trail of Venom, Planet of the Symbiotes, and Carnage Unleashed/Sinner Takes All. But anyway, this is also a good story. Ann showed up in this story too.

Along Came a Spider (1996)
Took place after Sinner Takes All and Planet of the Symbiotes. A decent story where Ann and Eddie have to deal with the consequences from Sinner Takes All. It’s tragic that the police forced Ann to lure Eddie and Eddie simply wanted to get her out but somehow made things worse. I can tell they do care about each other despite already devorced. Spiderman showed up (hence the title) but the focus is not on him.
Venom: The Hunted (1996)
First appearance of the symbiotes’ predator: phage. Venom mistook as serial killer. Scream/Donna Diego is in it too.
Venom: The Hunger (1996)
Dude, you are not in the Venom comic fandom if you haven’t read this lmao (joking) The famous heart-shaped chocolate “live happily ever after”

Venom is an angel. The US government is garbage and will nuke the USA coast whenever things don’t go according to their plan. Also. Soviet giant robot. Did I say nuke? The writer must be on drugs writing this because there is a notably increase of bad oneliner.

Venom still works for the government. A fun short story took place in a church. Eddie cross-dressed as Sister Edwina. Ghost Rider made a cameo.

Spider-Man – The Venom Agenda (1998)
The US government gave a vague order to Venom so that
J. J. Johnson
would stop digging their secret. Vonom took it as to assasinate the editor. Spiderman tried to stop it. Eddie Brock hit his head and temporary lost his memory about Spiderman’s true identity. It’s a suprisingly tight story with solid art. A great read.
Venom:
Final (1997-1998)
A really dark and depressive ending for the 90′s Venom. The story picked up right after
Spider-Man – The Venom Agenda. The US government thought Venom is unstable because Venom took their vague order the wrong way and decided to kill them. Venom escaped. Spiderman was tricked into stopping them without knowing what’s done to them. The arc concluded with Eddie and the Symbiote forced into seperation. Eddie arrested by the government, and the Symbiote left for dead as a vague “is it really the end?” ending. It is a good read but I was very upsetted by the downright torture and attenpted murder done to Eddie Brock/Symbiote who genuinly think they are doing good things for the government.
The 2000′s Venom is more or less a soft reboot of the 90′s Venom comics. And the overall tone of the stories changed from the 90′s mostly light hearted Eddie/Symbiote working as an anti-hero to the 2000′s depressive and darker tone. Eddie and the Symbiote deserted and even hated each other. It’s not a good time for Symbrock shippers.
Venom: 2003-2004
The no-one-talk-about-it 18 issues of Venom comic. It tried to be a horror comic like the movie Alien but it’s not fun. Eddie Brock and the Symbiote were barely in it. The story
contradict each other
and has plot hole within itself lmao. Don’t read it. You won’t miss anything.
Venom:
Spectacular Spider-man Vol.2
(2003-2005)
The Symbiote is The Evil Voice Whispering In Eddie’s Head. Eddie Brock got cancer. The Symbiote abondoned Eddie. Spiderman tricked the Symbiote into re-bonding to a dying Eddie. They hate each other. Thanks I hate it.
Venom:
Dark Origin (2008-2009)
An “origin” story for Eddie Brock’s background but completely failed to capture any character trait showned in the previous decade’s comics. Eddie was written as a Psychopath™ which is completely OOC if you actually read any of the 90′s Venom arc. Don’t read it if you like Eddie Brock. This book can burn in Hell.
Venom: Spider-Man – New Ways To Die (2009)
There are several events between Spectacular Spider-man Vol.2 and this including Eddie went through some kind of
epiphany
and sold the Symbiote, the Symbiote ended up bonding with Mac Gargan. Eddie’s cancer was cured by Mr. Li and became Anti-Venom. Eddie tried to kill the Symbiote. The Symbiote refused to let Mac kill Eddie despite almost being killed by Eddie.
