From what I (as a lazy buddhist) understand, before one reaches to “awakening””enlightenment” one must go through the phase of absolute self-oblivion, no self-conscious. This phase is called 忘我, pronounced “Bohga” in Japanese, which coincidentally sounds a bit similar to Bor-Gullet.

So in my headcanon Bodhi’s didn’t “awake” when he was convinced to deliver the message, but Bor-Gullet was a necessary preparation leading him to his enlightenment in the final moment, when he says his last words. Because that moment, he finally forgives himself, letting go of everything he carried on his shoulders.
