Tulips… Wild red tulips were imported to Europe by European merchants from the Greek island of Chios during the island’s occupation. These were sold into Holland and for a long time the tulip bulb was one of the most expensive merchantises in Germany and the Netherlands being even more valuable than gold.

In the island of Chios they would and still bloom every March and entire plains become red from the flowers.

There they were called “Lalades” Λαλαδες.
