About the whole “Carmen’s ending was changed to protest violence against women" thing: Reminder that Carmen was the abuser in the story. Carmen was manipulative and unfaithful (and caused her own downfall). So basically the new ending is saying “it’s okay for horrible people to get off scot free as long as they are women". Don José, a man with a fiancee, wanted Carmen, who is a single woman, to be his lover… that’s a real faithful man here. 10/10 would marry him.

Don José, a soldier in active duty, released Carmen, a criminal in captive, because his dick and testosterone controlled his higher brain function… what a faithful soldier. Our country needs men like him.

Don José, a soldier in duty, chose to fight his superior officer instead of arresting the smugglers and Carmen, because, again, his brain was controlled by his dick… I sure want men like him in my troops. Pretty sure he won’t give up the nuclear bomb code at the first sight of a pussy.

Don José a soldier turned smuggler, killed Carmen because she rejected him. Wow, 100/10 boyfriend material… wait, he’s not even her boyfriend.

But yeah, it’s all the woman’s fault. Because women are manipulative and unfaithful pfffffffffff Right, in men’s point of view of course. (BTW what kind of criminal won’t try to talk their way out ? pretty sure the police has already got very tired of it)

Manipulative is Frollo using his power and glamor to control and shape Quasimodo into his obedient slave. Not a soldier who has all the power in an enforcer-criminal encounter but decided to desert his post and duty more than once because his brain was made of penis, then blamed the woman for his own downfall, and killed the woman because she rejected him.

You know what? Javert would never let Carmen go if he’s the one who arrested her lmao. He’ll throw her directly into the jail and probably add a few months for her bad attempt. I don’t know, she might even learn her lesson after that.

for all his issues javert would at least be rigid and fair lmao….

Look here, my buddy, my pal, Carmen is NOT the perpetrator here.

Don Jose is set o be the real villain from the begining. And this is never set to be a romance.

If you know anything baout 19ths century european, and mostly french literature, you’ll see that this is a common trope.

It followes well with the early sufragette movement and it goes in all arts as well as in music.

Tragical female characters who die eventually whle they have either a) showed defiance and independance aka translated into hubris and dying a very tragic death but the death is how they gain their real freedom..because that’s how horribly opressed women are that only death can give them the release they want..and so many works and operas of the time are written with heroins who follow that trope,

or b) they are the weak love interest, a very Opheliac character who is pure and dies a tragic death because of a man’s maltreatment.

in both cases they are the victims. Victims of their time and victims of man.

Now let’s go to carmen specifically. Product of her times….War was waging. A woman of her class hard to survive like that.

She does things to survive. Then this dudebro comes and presents himself as a Nice Guy ™ and eventually releases her. She may initially think she loves him because of this act of “kndness” it’s very common and a typical nice guy manipulative technique.

Once it shows his only reason for her freedom is her body we know he’s bad news.

She’s kind of enarmoured and he’s her only way out…so she goes along.

Until a real good guy shows up. But he’s poorer. He is pure though,,,he loves her he respects her (at lest that’s what we suppose) and she realises what she lived wasn’t love but manipulation and she was basically going to sell of to the dudebro.

So she decides to gain her freedom. She decides to do whatever a typical young man of her times would do. Go away with the person he loves despite all odds. Very romanticised move at the time.

Love conquers all.

Only male entitlement can beat that sometimes. And it does. And she dies.

Don’t thinkt he changed ending takes way anything from her original tragicality.

She will end up in prison…forever bound in a cage. Only her spirit will be free and not owed to any dude at least.

Better alternative than to find freedom in death. A bit healthier as a message too. More mmodern ….

Also..i could give you 1000000 examples of score andlyrics that show Don Jose is a bad dude , musical tropes and harmony typically used for malice-driven characters, while both Carmen’s and the Toreadore’s themes and harmonies follow the “tragic hero” trope.

And i shouldknow. I analysed the opera. I’m a certified musicologist.

So pls.
